356 Taking the Corner

Paul Gorman’s new book ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful’ is an in-depth overview of the art and design of Barney Bubbles. A relatively forgotten artist of the 70′s and 80′s, Barney Bubbles created seminal works for bands such as Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Hawkwind and Ian Dury – many of you will recall the cover of Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces with the troop of elephants stampeding through the dust. Paul Gorman’s book has an excellent forward by Billy Bragg and is worth seeking out for that alone.

Really interesting paste ups by a Peruvian artist – quote below.

Eduard Escarchados

“…Anywhere you go in Lima you will come across phone numbers scrawled on the walls, sidewalks, bridges and highways. These numbers are painted throughout the city by escarchadores (pebble dashers) and serve as a crude and subversive form of advertising… …. with the help of my partner in crime Chanchito I tracked down the people behind the numbers and we managed to convince some of them to be photographed next to their numbers. We then created life size wheat-pastes of them which we posted up in the original locations where they were photographed.” Makisapa

Growing up, I spent hours rummaging through boxes of vintage rally photos in my uncle’s garage. One particular photo that’s stayed with me, was of a scrawny, sunburned bloke muscling a 1960′s Escort through a hard right. Half his body hanging out the window, pine trees whipping past, he had a half smoked dart hanging limply off his bottom lip. No helmet. No intercom. Not a roll cage in site.

In the box were a number of pictures from the same event. In many of them you could make out the same rally car. In every picture, without fail, this guy either had a smoke out the side of his mouth, or a grin from ear to ear.
